Library Russian armors X-XVII enturies the missile weapon

Artist Vladimir Semenov.
the missile weaponBow and arrows were used from the earliest times and they were weapon and combat, and hunting. Bows were done from the tree (juniper, birch and others.) and horn. Already in THE X century of pommel in Russia they had sufficiently complex device. The middle part of the bow was called "handle", and entire tree of bow - "kibit". Long elastic bent halves of bow were called "horns", or "arms". Horn consisted of two wooden laths, well processed, urged and glued. Along the flat sides they pasted over by white part of birch bark. The tendons, which were being attached at the handle and the ends, stuck to the back of bow. For strengthening the elasticity instead of the white part of birch bark bone and horny plates sometimes stuck. On the articulations of the separate parts of bunch the tendons, which then were greased by glue, were wound, while the strips of the boiled white part of birch bark were superimposed on it. With the production of bow durable fish glue was used. In extremities "it is horny" they were located upper and lower cover plates. The bowstring passed through the lower cover plates. The overall length of bow reached two or is more meter. To the bow was put on the case, which was named "to napuch'", or to "naluch'e". Arrows for the bow could be cane, reed, birch, apple-tree, cypress. Case for the arrows was called "quiver", or "Thule". All the equipment wholly bore the name "saadak", or "sagadak". To naluch' with the bow they bore to the left; quiver with the arrows - to the right. To naluch' and quiver frequently made from the skin, morocco they decorated with sewing, precious stones, velvet or brocade.

Arbalests or arbalests were another type of missile weapon. Arbalest was inferior to bow on the rate of fire, then exceeded it on the force of impact of arrow and closely grouped fire. Self-firing "bolt" from two hundred is meter valyl from the horse of the rider and easily broke through iron hauberk.
